Ruby meets Officer Wilson!
If you have been reading this blog for a while now, you probably have determined that being Ruby's Mom is a true gift. There are so many adjectives to describe her that I could never list them all. But, some of my favorites are: Happy, Full of Life, Spirited and SMART! And, I am not talking book smart... This little tornado is street smart already! So savvy, she has become the car seat escape artist. Her big sister would have never even thought to push the red magic button that could have set her free. But, give Ruby a challenge, and she will rise to the occasion. A great skill when it does not include risking your life! So, today when we were cruising down one of our local highways at 65mph I notice this cute pixie standing up in her seat in my rearview mirror.... So, I "calmly" pulled over in rush hour traffic, and duck taped her in. Yes, you read that correctly, DUCK TAPED HER IN! I am sure this is not going to win me any Mother of the Year awards. But, you must give me a point for being resourceful.... Once back on the road, I headed directly to our local police station.
That is where a very polite, Officer Wilson, had a meeting with 'Her Rubiness!' I am not quite sure if she was impressed, but she was very quiet as he told her why it was important to stay in her seat.... As we were leaving she gave him her award winning smile and wave....
I know I am not the only one out there with Little Miss Adventure. So, if you have any good ideas for me, pass them on. I would prefer not to duck tape my daughter in her seat everyday!!!!
So, there is the story, of Ruby meeting her first Police Officer! Thank you Officer Wilson! Hopefully, we will not be back soon!

What a priceless story! And a great idea to stop by the police station. We are always telling EllaKate that the police are watching mommy and she will get in trouble if everyone isn't following all the safety rules. She doesn't want me to get in trouble so it usually works. Ruby is such a beautiful little girl- that smile is breath taking!!!

My friend did exactly the same thing with her 7 year old when she stole something from the store. Drove her directly to the police station and had a police officer give her what-for!! Worked like magic. I'm hoping your "dose" does too!

Yet another use for duck tape. Thanks, I added that to my list of handy things to know for when I finally become a mom. She is just too much =). My question is why do they make that button, the one you don't want them to take much notice of, bright red?

That is so funny! I think that catalog One Step Ahead (on the web too) has something made to cover the car seat button. It's been a long time since I've needed anything from that catalog, but they usually have something for everything.
It must have scared you to death to look back there and see her standing up! Thankfully, none of mine ever did that.
Okay, not to be crass but I think I just wet my pants laughing so hard. What a darling little imp! I can't believe she let herself out of her seat. You had to be MORTIFIED. I can't believe you had duct tape with you--what a superwoman. I can't believe you stopped at the police station. I am overwhelmed by this ENTIRE story and will use it as necessary.
Just today Lindy asked me if I rode in a car seat when I was a baby and I had to explain how things didn't used to be so safe...I hope she's not planning to make a release like her Rubiness.

Hi! This is my first time commenting and I just wanted to say I really enjoy your blog! I'm a fellow Twin Cities SW suburb resident (enjoying the fall color, which seems to have come earlier this year) and hope to adopt from China in the future.
That must have been scary seeing Ruby out of her carseat on a highway, but good idea with the duct tape!

You go mom!!! That sounds like something I would have done. My friend's son does this, too, and she got some advice that worked.
She took him to Build A Bear and let him select a "special bear" to love and care for. "Bear" goes everywhere with them and Rhyne's "big boy job" is to buckle up "Bear" and make sure that he stays safe.
She said it works well.
Duck tape is Great-huh? : )
I am cracking up! I have a little Houdini myself but she has never climbed out of the car seat (yet). Who knew duct tape could hold a 2 year old down!
So resourceful of you to go to the police station. With my hubby being an officer, my kids are always on the lookout for people not buckling up. I bet Officer Wilson will never forget her!

Absolutely adorable story. I think it was a great idea taking her to the police station to meet Officer Wilson. :) The only suggestion I have for helping her stay in her seat is good old fashioned bribery! Perhaps the promise of a piece of candy or something else would coax her into staying put! Good Luck!

Too Funny! I guess duct tape does fix almost anything. And I would have never thought of taking her to meet the police officer. Great & funny plan! Hope Miss Ruby learned her lesson.

I've got a little boundary pusher of my own...she has been since the moment we got her. Want a good laugh some time? Read our China journals! As challenging as she has been at times, she has the sweetest personality, and she makes me laugh every single day! But I live in fear of her escaping from her car seat. She can already unbuckle the straps in the grocery cart! So no ideas, but I applaud your ingenuity...brilliant!
