Thankful for my Parents today!

 Diana Jo - 6 months

44 years ago, my beautiful mother gave birth to me at 7:30am via C-section.  I can imagine perfectly my handsome Dad pacing the halls of the hospital in Hammond, IN.  He tells me this story often... After they came in to tell him that he had a new daughter, they broke the news to him that her tongue was tied, and that it would need to be "snipped!"  If you knew my father, you would know that this news would not be taken lightly.  To this day he worries and watches over his "babies!" long distance like the doting and loving father he has always been!  Ironically, that "tongue-tied" baby girl went on to be a Speech Communication's Major, and spent her professional career talking for a living.  I am not usually at a loss for words, very often!  I am sure Jeff would agree with that statement!

This thankful Thursday post is dedicated to my parents:
  • To Mom for bringing me into this world so gracefully
  • To Mom & Dad for giving me so many opportunities as a child
  • For all the times you watched me fall (literally on the ice and in life) and gave me the courage and the confidence to pick myself up again
  • For encouraging independence
  • For being there in the peaks and valleys of my life
  • For celebrating the wins, and the blessings
  • For always being willing to help, no matter what the need
  • For demonstrating the importance of sacrificing self to help others
  • For the love and time you give to friends, family, organizations, church, etc.
  • For teaching me the importance of respecting authority, loved ones, & most importantly God
  • For loving me unconditionally
  • For loving your Granddaughters so deeply
My list could go on and on....  Most importantly I have been blessed to be raised by two parents that have been married for almost 55 years. Who put others before them, and who until the end of time will love all three of their children for who God created them to be!

"Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it."
Proverbs 22:6

I love you!

More Surprises!

Cake anyone?

Rubber Gloves with style!

This morning, Ruby and I had a breakfast date with Miss Liz, of the infamous, "Camp H!"
When we arrived, I asked the hostess to point me to the table where the cute blonde was waiting.. When I turned the corner, there was the world's biggest balloon on the table, and Liz along with my dear friend Jenny.  Next came Sally, and then Robyn.  These are the incredible friends that have been with me thru the highs and lows of life in the past few years.  These are my amazing family group Mom's.  All special, and all like sisters to me.  It was such a fun breakfast and another fun surprise for the birthday week.

For those of you who know me well, you know that the tasks of the everyday household chores do not speak my love language.  But, now that I have the world's CUTEST rubber gloves and matching apron, I may be inspired to find joy in the meal planning, the laundry and cleaning the bathrooms!  Can I just say that my new SHOE cake server with the Ruby Red heel is fabulous.  It may never leave my counter!  Definitely worthy of display, don't you think!?  I LOVE it!  Thank you Liz!

OK - time to go..  I have some new chocolate with caramel on the inside to partake in while 'Her Rubiness' is sleeping!  Thank you ladies for making this such a special day!  I love you all!!!

Tomorrow is actually the 4th time I will turn 40!  Thank you for all of your sweet messages!  I did the math today, I will be a young 60 when Ruby Mei heads off to college...  OUCH!

Blessings,
Diana

OK - I will admit it.. It is my birthday week! My sister Barbara and Ainsley planned a wonderful surprise dinner for me last night. It was a gorgeous day, and a perfect evening. Thank you girls for such a lovely party! . Of course, having two precious daughters this year to ring in another year with her Mama makes it that much easier to be 40 again!

When we were waiting for Ruby Mei, I was blessed to meet many people along our road to China.

Many of them have been mentioned here before. Our red thread is like a spider web that reaches both locally, and across the country. When I originally joined the October 2005 LID group some other Minnesotan's reached out to me and invited me to lunch, (thanks Amy O.) That first lunch group, has now grown to multiple families that are now home with their precious children, or are still waiting for their gifts from China.  Other great connections have been made through our agency AWAA, Ainsley's school, and other avenues that I never imagined.

Jeff and I, with the help of Ainsley & Ruby, hosted a fun event Saturday night for several of the local families in our area.  We had a great turn out, and lots of fun.  When we closed the door to the last of our guests we felt so blessed to be a part of this overall red thread.  All of the children were so beautiful and precious.  Clearly they are all adored and loved!!

Once again, we pause to give thanks for our journey that has brought us so much joy!  We look forward to more fun events with families near and far...
Blessings,

Last year on this day....

Sunday, Ainsley and I were in Ruby's room while she hammed it up for the camera. About a month ago she refused to look at it. Now, she gives us the "tilt" or she cups her hands on her face. I am taking advantage of it while I can! As you know, I love taking pictures of my girls!

Today seems to be an appropriate day to feature Ruby Mei here. One year ago we we were celebrating Ruby's "delivery" with the most beautiful baby shower. Unfortunately, six hours after that celebration Jeff and I received a call we had been expecting. My brother-in-law Jack lost his battle to Parkinson's that night at 9:15pm. Ruby will always represent the circle of life in our family. When God takes away, he blesses you in some other way. Ruby Mei is that blessing to her Aunt Bop! We celebrated Jack's life today with Barb and some of her dear friends. We were so grateful to be a part of her day. Thankfully, we see the light coming back in to Barb's world. God has been so faithful.

So today I remember the gift of joy and the hope that a new baby can bring, even on the saddest of days! We give thanks for the timing of Ruby's entrance into our world and the smiles and hugs she has given her very special Aunt throughout the year, especially for the kisses shared today!

We love you Aunt Bop!

A Weekend of Sweetness! & SLEEP!

Clearly God saw the dark circles, and He agreed it was time for this Mama to get some sleep! Thank you to all of you (including my BSF group) who were praying for us.  She has had four nights in a row without a party of two in her room at 3am!!

We had a very low key and productive weekend around the house.  Spring is still fighting with winter, but it is nice enough to be outside today.  The promise of 60's has Jeff cleaning off the deck furniture!!  We are hosting a fun event on Saturday here, so we are praying for nice weather!

As you can see from the pictures, Ainsley has been helping with Ruby's nap and bedtime routine.  I let her put her down for a nap the other day (diaper duty and all) and she did great.  Last night Ruby let her read her two favorite books to her, "Goodnight Gorilla," and "Five Little Monkeys!"  It was so precious as Mama-razzi snuck in for some priceless pics!

Today I have a heavy heart though.  A dear friend that I have met through Ainsley's friendship with her daughter, is taking her husband Scott back to The Mayo Clinic tomorrow morning.  Scott was diagnosed with Acute Leukemia last summer.  He has fought a very long battle thus far.  Unfortunately, his blast counts have increased dramatically and they really need God to intervene with the miracle of healing!  Thankfully, we are going to take care of precious Lauren tonight.  Ainsley adores her, and I know she is so excited that we get to help with a "sleepover!"

Please pray for Michelle and Scott!  They have two children, and as you can all imagine this is so overwhelming.  I am praying not only for Scott, but for peace for Michelle as she struggles trying to be there for Scott & the children.  She is one of the most faithful people I have ever met.  She truly inspires me as she hangs on to the promise of hope!

So once again I find myself giving thanks for good health for Jeff, and for our children, and for my parents who amaze me in their late 70's, and early 80's!  I am reminded that life here is only temporary, so I choose to not take it for granted today!

Hug your husbands & your kiddos!
Blessings,
Diana

Thankful Thursday!

Ruby's latest modeling pose... I say "smile" she does the tilt!!
So excited to actually be outside in her backyard!
So happy!!!!
A very special Daddy with his little ruby...

Wow it is Thursday already! I bet most of you are not waiting for another snow storm to hit! Yes, it is true... I am not quite sure how to be thankful for that, but by the end of this post I will think of something!!

This week I am thankful for:
  • The memory of seeing Ruby Mei get into her new toddler swing yesterday with Jeff on the swing set. She was sooooo excited! She loves to swing and climb! I think we will be spending a lot of time out there!
  • The beautiful concert that I attended with my sister on Sunday night to benefit Parkinson's. The anniversary of my brother-in-law's death from this awful disease is April 15th. I am thankful that I am hear to celebrate Jack's life with her.
  • So many of you have asked me about how Baby Madison is doing. Daily she reminds Julie and Todd of the miracle she is. She had to have another un-expected procedure two weeks ago where a stint was inserted so her heart would not have to work so hard. God protected Maddy again, and she is doing great! We continue to pray for protection. We are thankful spring will be here someday so we can start spending time with Maddy. Risk of infection has been too great, so the last time I really saw her was when I took her pictures.
  • I am thankful for Jeff, and the weight he carries around here. I am blessed with a husband who gives 150% both at work and at home. I tell him all the time, that he is the best "wife" I have ever had! Last night, he helped Ruby get back to sleep at 3am. Thanks honey!!
  • I am thankful for the way my 5th grade girls blessed me last night... We only have four weeks left. They reminded me last night just why I do this!! This verse is very applicable to what we have been studying, "The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." 1Sam 16:7
  • I am thankful for the China Special Needs program, and how it has grown with the long wait. What a blessing to see Maggie and Hudson blossom in the last 10 days. Tomorrow they begin the next chapter of their journeys, their trips home!!
  • I am thankful for two TV shows, that we actually can watch as a family, "Extreme Home Makeover," and "American Idol." We all look forward to these nights together! Who do you think is going home tonight?
  • Lastly, I am thankful that it is Masters weekend! Jeff and I were lucky enough to attend this event in 1999. We have such great memories from our weekend in Augusta, GA!
OK - I am digging down deep to be thankful for the weather forecast... It will be quick, and within days they promise we will see 60's.

I hope you have time to count your blessings today!

Not 100% today.....

Thanks for your sweet comments!
The doctor determined that Ruby has a sinus infection.
We left with a prescription for Amoxicillin! YEAH
Last night went better after a very rough start, so thanks for your prayers!
We are bringing dinner to welcome home another beautiful Jiangxi Jewel, Sarah, today!

Ruby's parents are desperately seeking sleep these days!!! I don't write about it a lot because in the big picture it is so temporary. It is rare when a night goes by that we are not awakened by crys in the room next to us. Sometimes, she settles down quickly, other times one of us (usually me by choice) is comforting her and doing whatever it takes to get her back to sleep quickly. Thankfully, Ainsley could sleep through a train going through her room, so she never wakes up too.

When we received Ruby's referral last March, they described her as a moderate sleeper. That description has proved to be accurate ever since meeting her in Nanchang. The good news is that she has come so far since that time. She is on a great schedule here, and she takes a daily 2-2.5 hour nap. Today is an exception because she is not feeling well. The last two nights have been really rough, and we have a doctor's appointment at 4:45 to rule out an ear infection, etc.. She usually goes down for bed easily (again with the exception of the last 2 nights) but as stated she usually does not sleep through.

Thankfully, I do believe that this will get better. My foggy memory reminds me that Ainsley experienced some of this too. I guess I was just a lot younger then!

What I want to say is that just last night I was reminded what a gift this child is to me and to our family. I wouldn't trade the dark circles under my eyes for one day without this little girl. Being a mother has taught me a great deal about sacrificing self. Some nights when I admit I wish I didn't have to get out of bed at 2am, I quickly remind myself what a privilege it is to be the one that gets to take care of Ruby Mei.

This poem by Marueen Hawkins says it all for me:

Before you were conceived I wanted you.

Before you were born I loved you.

Before you were here an hour I would die for you.

This is the miracle of love.

-MH

Ruby, thank you for the reminder to "give thanks always!" Even when I am tired!

Blessings,

Diana

It just happened....

I think Ruby Mei got an email from Kate Emerson, because with no warning at all, 'Her Rubiness' has turned into quite the Mama this week! Her ability to handle twins at such a young age is impressive! Baby #1 went in her car seat today to visit Daddy for lunch. She also took a nap in the doll crib that is now in Ruby's room, and she took a trip to the mall with Ruby in her stoller. A very busy day!

Ainsley is very excited about Ruby's new passion, and she has fitted Ruby's "babies" with quite the nursery in her little sister's room. They are all sleeping peacefully as I type!

I do believe I have another "girly girl" in the house! Thankfully, Jeff is not ashamed to play a mean game of "Pretty Princess," or to help with the urgent needs of the "American Girl Bitty Babies!" Another reason I love that man!

Thanks Ainsley for giving up your dolls to your little sister! Now that is true sacrifice and love!

Thankful Thursday!

While Ruby made a little art project all over herself with her yogurt this morning, I was able to get these pictures to download finally! I am thankful for that!!!

I am also thankful that the sun is shining, and I can see grass in our backyard. Spring must be coming our way today!!!

But, mostly I am thankful today for the chance I had to get away with Jeff and the girls last week. It was a huge blessing just to spend time together with no agenda for a few days.

Lastly, I am thankful for how hard Jeff works to provide our family with some very special opportunities. We love you!!

Count your blessings today!

Spring Break 2008!

Hi!  We are home safely from a great five days in beautiful Scottsdale, AZ!  The weather was perfect!  And, we loved the resort we stayed in!  Ainsley swam until she turned into a fish, and 'Her Rubiness' learned quickly that five days with no agenda other than her nap was pretty fun!  She loved the baby pool (other than the time she submerged herself completely!)  Ruby was a trooper because she came down with a nasty cough and cold the minute we arrived.  I can't say Jeff and I feel very rested since we had the little cutie in our bed around 2am every night.  All in all, our time away as a family of four was great!  We are already planning next year's get-away!

Here are some of my favorite pics from the weekend.  There are many, so I will just post a few today.  I am still hit or miss on my internet connections so it is not allowing me to be very creative....

We arrived home last night to Minneapolis looking like a city in a snow globe.  Yes, March ended with a 6" bang!  It's already melting, so Spring may actually arrive this year!  I am just grateful that I did get a taste of summer,  and I did achieve my goal of eating chips and fresh salsa for the last five days!  YUM!

Congrats to my AWAA blog friends, Denise and Sharon, who now are the proud Mama's of adorable Maggie Mae and beautiful Hudson!!  (You can see them at my favorite links to the right. )

Blessings,
Diana
