Parent Observation At the Dance Studio!

Well I know I have been a "bad blogger" lately so I am trying to make up for it with some December photos!  My kids are going to look back on 2013 and wonder why they didn't do much...  It's time for me to do a better job of at least documenting the highlights!!!

Yesterday was a highlight!  Parent observation at the dance studio where Sienna and Ruby dance.  It's actually in the lower level of our church, and I was amazed at the light I was able to get...  I loved having the one on one time with both girls.  They are in different classes, at different times..  So, here are some of my favorites of my beautiful dancers!

I love this dance school..  They are teaching our girls that they are beautifully created from the inside and out.  Every class closes with a prayer that goes something like this, "Thank you God for dance, Thank you God for my family, Thank you God for my friends, Thank you God for my teachers, and Thank you God for beautiful me."   It's so sweet!

Two Years of Forever with Sienna Grace!

Sienna2YearsGotcha-0362

I will be honest.. I almost forgot that yesterday was the Anniversary of "Sienna Day" in China two years ago! Thanks to a call from her Daddy, I was able to make up for it when she got home from school!!! At first I wanted to beat myself up about almost missing this special date.. But, then a wise friend reminded me that maybe to just give myself a break and take it as a positive sign of just how much a part of my world she is now... Since I am all about giving grace, I will go with that! I used to pride myself on not ever forgetting things, having birthday cards in the mail, going the extra mile.. But, I guess I had to let go of that Type-A perfection 2 kids ago!

So, back to Sienna... Today is actually her official adoption day. I will never forget how anxious I felt walking back into that Civil Affairs office with the child who had lit it up the day before.. But, who showed up with us that morning was a happy, silly four year old... It was our first glimpse of this side of her. That day, the Civil Affairs Officer told Jeff how lucky he was... What would she say now seeing this amazing little girl.. The word blessed comes to mind!

I feel like I can breathe a great big sigh out loud when I write about Sienna Grace now. She by far has stretched me more than any other child I have raised. Perhaps that is one of the reasons God chose her for me. He knew I was the one that needed to grow!

DSC_5498

I read a poster once.. "Lord, please grant me the patience to deal with my blessings today!" There were days when I prayed that prayer. Ok, who am I kidding.. I still do some days. But overall, I am in awe of Sienna Grace. She has come so far in just two years! Spiritually and physically, she is our little miracle!

I will always describe our Hunan girl as tough and tender. But, she is also smart and beautiful. Funny and happy. Extroverted and Introverted. Compassionate and strong. She can be sweet, she can be spicy. She is girly!! My money is still on her being a doctor one day. She would be fabulous!

DSC_5914

Just the other day, out of no where, Sienna said to me... "Mama, thank you for adopting me!" The magnitude of that single statement from our 6 year old is hard to put into words. I think it put all of the frustrating days and nights into perspective. God has used Sienna Grace to refine me... He has taught me what love can do. He has shown me that I can do hard. He has shown me I can make mistakes and be forgiven. He has shown me that sometimes the greatest rewards are small victories. He has given me a priceless gift.. A little girl that just last night squeezed me tight when I told her "Thank you for trusting me Sienna. I will forever be your Mama and I am so blessed!"

DSC_5370

It's only fitting that she chose to watch Mulan on her special day.. I had to choke back the tears during the scene when her father points to the plum blossom bud that is late to bloom..
And, he says.. "My My.. what beautiful blossoms we have this year. But, look.. this one is late. But, I'll bet when it blooms, it will be the most beautiful of all!"

Sienna Grace, Happy Forever Day! You are beautiful... Inside and out!
And we are blessed because you are ours... forever!

More Sugar Than Spice Lately!

Sienna-9544Sapphire

We have lovingly referred to Sienna Grace as our "Hot & Spicy Girl" since the day we met her... Not only did it describe the food of her Province, it described her personality perfectly... I have described her as tough and tender... I expect she will always be those things... But, we are beginning to see more and more of the sweet Sienna... It's been almost two years (March 1st) since we met our girl.. And, wow are we proud of how much she has grown, accomplished, and matured!

We had our first scare this week since Sienna's splenectomy on September 30th, 2010. She woke up with a high fever on Wednesday morning... We had been warned that when this happens to take it very seriously.. Instead of going to the hospital I took her to our Pediatrician.. Let's just say we were one phone call away from getting admitted to Children's Hospital. Thankfully, Sienna's Hematologist was available to give direction to our Pediatrician... They were able to administer Rocephin (in the form of 3 awful shots) to her in the office so we didn't have to go downtown. Thankfully by the next morning her white counts were back down, hemoglobin up, and she was looking like herself again! Praise God! By 3:00 yesterday she was feeling so much better and bored without Ruby that she asked me to do a photo shoot!... It was a sweet time with my beautiful girl!

Sienna-9540-4Sapphire

When Ruby got home from school yesterday she brought home a "take home" folder of homework for Sienna.. The two of them disappeared into my office for almost 1 hour.. Ruby went through every page with her so patiently.. I honestly think Ruby could teach Kindergarten!!! :) Sienna was back to school today celebrating her 1/2 birthday with Ruby and her class! She was so excited when we told her she could go!

Sienna Grace ~ I think "Sugar and Spice" is an amazing combination on you!!! I know God is going to use your amazing story of grace in remarkable ways! We love every layer of beautiful, spicy and sweet you!

Another Tooth Fairy Visit for Sienna Grace!

SiennaToothOut-9365

I promise I have more Christmas Day photos to share! But, Sienna Grace deserves top billing today! Her second top tooth finally came out!!! This makes a total of four for her!!! This was very exciting because as she describes this loss she flung it out while wiggling it with her tongue!!! This happened while Jeff and I were on our date Monday. We got the sweetest call from our very excited daughter!!!! And, we heard Ruby yelling in the back ground.. "It's a bleeder!" Poor Ruby is just waiting for it to be her turn!!

"Tooth Fairy" at 12:15 Today!

BdayGirl-7Action

**UPDATE! Sienna is home and doing great!!! She is not super excited about her tooth being gone, but the pain is manageable and the recovery room went well today!!!! She is happily eating some noodles as I type! Thank you for your prayers!!

It's hard to take a blog break when you have multiple birthdays, surgery, a move, and a trip to China all within a three week time span!! If I don't document it now, I never will....

Our new six year old is scheduled for her "tooth fairy" extraction at 12:15 today! Prayers for her protection and for the wonderful Dr. King would be so appreciated! She really had a tough time last June when she had dental surgery... So, we are praying that some of our learnings from her splenectomy will benefit her today! As you know Sienna is one brave little girl... But, it is no fun to have anything done in your mouth... ever! She had a great birthday yesterday, and she is excited to be six!!

Jeff and I have to divide and conquer today.. He will be at our new house closing, and I will be at the hospital watching the board until I can see my girl... Tomorrow the movers come and we will spend our first night "camping" in our new house!

Two weeks from today, we leave for China!!!!

Thank you for your prayers for our family!! And especially for Sienna Grace today!

A Special Trip With Daddy!

This evening Sienna took off with her Daddy on a special three day trip. Jeff surprised her with the news yesterday morning that they were heading off on an adventure together. He has a business trip in AZ, so she is tagging along to stay with her best friend, Nadi. She was so excited! And, we were so excited for her to have this time with her special pal and amazing family!

AZTrip-1

I am so proud of this little girl! I love her enthusiasm for all things new. And, I love how in just a year she has learned to go with the flow. I can tell she feels so much more secure here now. It's so amazing when I really think about how far she has come!

AZTrip-2

I also love this time that Sienna is getting with her Daddy alone. A special trip that she will never forget!

I hope she misses me a little! :)

A Tender Talk with Sienna...

When I met Sienna almost one year ago, I don't think I would have chosen the word tender to describe her. You may remember she proved her self worthy of her spiciness again and again. She still does on occasion! :)

Sienna-6PigHatSmallFileBlog

Over time, I would see the most beautiful layers in my daughter. The one that has empathy, and concern. A special quality that only God can place on the heart of a child.

Last night I was putting Sienna to bed. Like it has been so many nights since we came home, she was the last one to fall asleep. It was dark, and we had a beautiful Chinese lullaby playing. Sienna, asked me, "Mom - why do you seem so sad?" As has been my state since Saturday, the tears started quietly flowing down my cheeks, as I told her I missed Caymus. In the quietness of the night, Sienna sensed what was happening.. She wiped my cheeks gently, gave me the biggest hug and said, "Mom - I miss her too, and I am so sorry you are sad."

What happened next was so special... Sienna laid there pondering something, and she asked me if I thought we would see Caymus in Heaven. While I know the Bible does not state there are animals in Heaven, my broken heart chooses to believe she will be there waiting for me. My sensitive girl said, "Do you think my "China Mom" will be in Heaven too. More tears from this Mom.. My response, Sienna do you think your "China Mom" knows God. Her response, "I am not sure. Can we go there someday and tell her?"

I would love nothing more than to take my tender girl back to Hengshan one day to thank the woman who loved her for 4 years. And, for Sienna to explain to her that God has a plan for all of us. And that He brought me to my family so I could learn about him, and one day share it with you. That is my prayer for this precious child.

For now, I give thanks for my little girl who is loving and tender. I give thanks for all she has learned, and for all she has given. And, I give thanks for some of the most beautiful conversations I have ever had when she really should be sleeping.

Lastly, the portrait I have included here is from a gift we received one week ago. Since the day I met Sienna, I was determined to get baby pictures for her. With a lot of prayer, I reached out to her foster mother in a care package that I ordered within China and had it delivered by an angel.... The care package contained a beautiful silk photo album with 20 photos of Sienna and her life here with us, and with Nadi. I included a letter requesting that she share baby pictures if she had them, explaining why this was so important to Sienna. God answered so faithfully... She gave us three special photos of our girl, newborn, age 1 and age 2.. This beautiful photo speaks volumes to me. It portrays a woman who selflessly loved a child she most likely knew she could never keep.

Sienna-Age1-SmallFile

I can not close without thanking all of you for the sweet messages, emails, and phone calls I have received about Caymus. It has been a few rough days for this sensitive heart. Jeff has been checking in on me, and I love him for that. He had to leave yesterday.. I am going to be fine...eventually... Plain and simple, I miss her!

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

Psalm 48:14

Blessings,

A Sassy Solution!

Well..... They say everyone does it once in their life... For Ainsley it was 30 minutes before we were leaving for her pre-school Christmas concert when she was 4. For Sienna it was Tuesday evening, when I had my eye off her for a few minutes... The tool she used... The scissors I gave her to quietly cut paper... Yes, it is true... Sienna, our future hair stylist, decided to add a few extra layers to "The Sienna Signature Doo"... When I saw the pile of black hair neatly on the floor I never guessed it was hers... I thought she had practiced her future career on our black dog... Well, I guess there is one blessing in it.. She did not decide to practice on her little sister... I am guessing she tried, but Ruby was smart enough to quickly vacate the scene!

So, Thursday morning we went off to the spa (hair salon.) Yes, I know anyone reading a parenting book out there, would say I rewarded her for her bad behavior... But, quite honestly I rewarded me for mine. (I will admit my reaction to this creative expression was not exactly full of grace.) Yes, she looks adorable now... But, all I could think of was her first Christmas concert Monday night, first Christmas Eve pictures, etc...... Perhaps a tad bit shallow on my part... I am just being honest... Since I know there are some of you out there who get me, and love me anyway, for this admission, I thank you! What is it about daughters and Mom's and hair? Why does it mean so much to us, (me?)

So here are a few pictures from Sienna's "Consequence" for making a bad choice.. And, my "Consequence" for giving her the scissors in the first place!. Note: ALL scissors are now in a zip lock bag on a very high shelf!! And, Sienna has learned the answer to these two questions, "Sienna who cuts your hair? Answer: "Brie does!" Thank you Brie for doing such a great job!!!! "And, Sienna... what are scissors used for?" Answer: "Cutting paper Mama!"

Well... Her Rubiness could not miss out on sharing this "Consequence" with her sister... She wanted short hair too... "Just like Sienna's" she told us... We agreed to sass it up in the back for her.. But, neither Brie or this Mama were ready to let go of her beautiful long bangs..
